The Minneapolis Billiard Club Fall Classic Tournament lived up to its name on October1-3.
Eighteen players from 5 states came to do battle on our Verhoevens to see who would find their way to victory. In the 1st bracket Fred Lamers went 5-0 to win the top spot and Bob Jacobson from Marshalltown, IA finished with a record of 3-2 as did Tim Gardner, but Bob had beat Tim with 4 more points in his losses.
The 2nd flight saw Robert Byrne go undefeated and Gary Eake making the finals with a 3-2 record just beating out Mike Leimer for the second spot in their flight. The last flight was tough with Lupe Cruz from Des Moines, IA winning 5 staight and "Dr.Cue" Tom Rossman going 4-1 to fill out the finals bracket.
On Saturday night the Minneapolis Billiard Club served up the chow with chicken and ribs from George Bissonnettes' Choo Choo restaurant. We played the first two rounds of the finals after the meal on Saturday evening. On Sunday morning as the finals continued, Tom Rossman defeated Bob Byrne in fifteen innings for the tournaments best game of 1.667. By early afternoon the finals bracket was becoming very interesting with Lupe Cruz being 3-0, Tom Rossman also being 3-0, and Bob Byrne being 3-1. It was time for Lamers to play Rossman and Fred managed a victory of 25-12 to leave Rossman at 3-1 and Lamers with 2-2.
Next up was Lamers and Cruz, and Lamers' victory against Cruz guaranteed Lamers second place with a record of 3-2 and a record of 46 points in his two losses. That set the stage for Cruz and Rossman both being 3-1. The winner of that match would win the tournament and the loser would get third place. Lupe Cruz, being a very skilled player, won the match and the tournament with 25-14 in 25 innings.
The Minneapolis Billiard Club would like to thank the following for their contributions to make our tournament payouts well above average: Mickey Campbell, Paul Fritzam, Rene DuCret, Jim Larson, Matt Lind, Bob Jewett, David Levine, and Joe Becker with Progressive Lending. And for making the tournament run so smoothly, a big thanks to Mike Pratt, Richard Fox, Dave Coan, and George Bissonnette. Thank you to all of the players, you all make this the huge success that it is. Winnings were as follows: Cruz - $1,700, Lamers - $1,225, Bryne - $600.00, Rosaman - $870.00, Jacobson - $250.00, Eake - $400.00.
Progressive Lending Solutions is a proud sponsor of the annual L.C.B.C. Tourney on the Minerva Chain of Lakes in Danbury, WI. This contest involves (25) 2 person teams setting out to bring back the 5 heaviest bass for the day. The entry fee per boat is $120.00. In 2010 fishermen placed as follows: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 10th, 15th, 20th and a prize for the heaviest bass and Dogfish, which was listed as the mystery fish - totaling over $2,000 in boat winnings. The contest starts at 4:30am and ends at 5pm. Houmans Resort on Love Lake, has been the destination for the weigh in, also catering food and beverages to the fishermen, family, friends and spectators. Because of the limited entries allowed, the L.C.B.C.Tourney typically builds a healthy waiting list, which takes the contest to next level! In 2010, the L.C.B.C donated $100 to the WHS Athletic Dept. The 1st place winners for 2010 were Alan May and Jim Espeseth - their take home prize was $500. The heaviest bass was caught by John Zibell. Nearly $2,000 of raffle prizes were given out again in 2010 and we are looking forward to sponsoring the contest again in 2011! The date for the contest in 2010 was Saturday, June 5th.
